April 2012

Becker Endorses Rob Portman for Vice President

My first choice would have been for Senator Portman to run for president. Since that's not happening, I hope that Governor Romney selects Senator Portman as his running mate.

Kudos to Scott Nichols
Scott was the only member of the State Central Committee to cast a “NO” vote at the April 13th meeting. This is not a commentary on the wisdom of Scott’s vote. What I like is the idea of a man willing to stand alone and vote his principles.

Beckerisms

I recently attended my first Republican State Central Committee meeting as a non-member (or an alumnus). A number of observations and several questions came to mind: A great deal of money was spent on the election of the new members. Governor Kasich and the Tea Party won the fight. What did they win? It is true that Kevin DeWine is no longer Chairman. If I'm not mistaken, about a third of the committee turns over every two years. Therefore, I would have expected 20 new members. We have 24. With Governor Kasich and the Tea Party in control of the SCC, I would expect major changes. Aside from a new chairman, I don't see it (yet). Prior to the election, the three Party leaders (in alphabetical sequence) were
Bob Bennett (RNC)
Jo Ann Davidson (RNC)
Kevin DeWine (Chairman)
And the parliamentarian was Chris Slagle.

After the reorganization meeting, the three Party leaders are:
Bob Bennett (Chairman)
Jo Ann Davidson (RNC)
Kevin DeWine (RNC)
And the parliamentarian is Chris Slagle.

This is not a criticism of the process, the committee, or any individual(s). It just appears that the more things change, the more they stay the same.

And furthermore, I’ve been fascinated by all of the talk about which choices might be acceptable to the governor. A governor gets to make a lot of decisions. But Party chairman and the RNC members are not among them. Those decisions are entirely up to the members of the state central committee.

Becker for the 65th State Representative District
The election will be November 6th. I’ve raised over $32,000 and expanded my donor base to more than 335 people in six different states! Donation size has ranged from $1 to $1,000 and has averaged $57. Nearly all contributions have been from individuals only. You could donate for FREE! You may know that a $50 per taxpayer dollar-for-dollar tax CREDIT (It is $100 on a joint return.) is available every year. The “Ohio political contributions credit” is on line 55 of your Ohio IT 1040. Simply claim it on your state of Ohio tax return and get your money back. Contributions to candidates for State Representative (and other "state offices") qualify for this credit. That is why you will be able to help me, to help you, and have it cost you nothing.
