June 2013

Beckerisms
The Supreme Court has ruled that so-called "gay married couples" should receive federal benefits and allowed so-called "gay marriages" to resume in California. Could there be any real doubt in anyone's mind that polygamy will become a reality in this country and sooner rather than later? If you consider the arguments in favor of so-called "gay marriage," the identical arguments could be applied to polygamy. Once marriage becomes redefined to include anything and everything, it will mean nothing.

Ohio House of Representatives

I sponsored three bills during June:
HB 188 eliminates the Ohio Marriage Penalty.
HB 191 corrects the definition of a machine gun.
HB 210 prohibits law enforcement from destroying firearms and requires that they be sold to federally licensed firearms dealers (FFL).

Dr. Richard Vedder testified before the House Ways and Means Committee. Per my question, he confirmed that Ohio can phase out the state income tax over ten years without raising other taxes or cutting spending. Spending could continue to increase per the inflation rate. I would like to test his theory.

The General Assembly passed, and the governor signed, the two-year state budget. It is a massive bill with many policy changes. The mix of tax increases and tax cuts results in a net tax decrease for all taxpayers. I voted "NO" primarily because of excessive spending. The General Revenue Fund (GRF) includes a $2.6 billion increase for FY 2014 over FY 2013 actuals. That is almost a ten percent increase. An additional $1 billion was appropriated for FY 2015. Furthermore, I'm troubled by tax increases of any kind. Although they are more than offset by tax cuts, I would have preferred to see no tax increases and spending at the inflation rate. We are WAY beyond that.
