Ohio’s Issue 1 – Vote NO

Repeals Ohio’s anti-gerrymandering law

The following are the first two paragraphs of the ballot language:

Repeal constitutional protections against gerrymandering approved by nearly three-quarters of Ohio electors participating in the statewide elections of 2015 and 2018, and eliminate the longstanding ability of Ohio citizens to hold their representatives accountable for establishing fair state legislative and congressional districts.

Ohio’s Issue 1 paragraph #1

Establish a new taxpayer-funded commission of appointees required to gerrymander the boundaries of state legislative and congressional districts to favor either of the two largest political parties in the state of Ohio, according to a formula based on partisan outcomes as the dominant factor, so that:
A. Each district shall contain single-member districts that are geographically contiguous, but state legislative and congressional districts will no longer be required to be compact; and
B. Counties, townships and cities throughout Ohio can be split and divided across multiple districts, and preserving communities of interest will be secondary to the formula that is based on partisan political outcomes.

Ohio’s Issue 1 paragraph #2

From the Ohio Republican Party:

Issue 1 is being pushed by politicians who want a system that favors their political class. Ohioans are coming together to fight this blatant abuse of power
It’s a lie to say Issue 1 ends gerrymandering — it will actually enshrine gerrymandering in the Ohio Constitution.
Issue 1 is being pushed by politicians who want a system that will require bureaucrats and their paid consultants to draw new legislative districts that favor one political party over the other.
Issue 1 eliminates anti-gerrymandering restrictions Ohio voters passed (by over 70%) in both 2015 & 2018.
Issue 1 will end the requirement for districts to be compact, meaning there will be districts that stretch over long distances through multiple counties and local communities will be sliced and diced.
A plan just like Issue 1 was tried in Michigan, where three federal judges unanimously ruled that the bureaucrat’s maps resulted in racial gerrymandering.
The map-drawing bureaucrats and their paid consultants will not be accountable to voters. It will be virtually impossible to remove them from office — even if they abuse their power.
Issue 1 eliminates the 222-year old authority of people chosen by Ohio voters to develop legislative district maps.
Under Issue 1, the bureaucrats who draw maps will be selected by retired political candidates who would be legally permitted to hand pick their friends and political allies.
Issue 1 severely restricts Ohio citizens from going to “any court” to stop the bureaucrats who draw the maps from violating their rights.
Issue 1 will cost millions of taxpayers’ money and will also force the state to pay unlimited legal expenses for the map-drawing bureaucrats and their paid consultants.
Issue 1 is almost entirely funded — with more than $25 million in mostly secret contributions — by out-of-state special interest groups. It will be their back door solution to gain power over Ohioans.

Ohio Republican Party

Republican Slate

Regarding our Republican slate of candidates, many are expected to be close races. Those include Moreno for US Senate; Deters, Hawkins, and Shanahan for Ohio Supreme Court; and Hava Laudon for State Board of Education. And of course, vote for Trump for President.

From Erick Erickson (9/6/2024)

Kamalaโ€™s Shifting Beliefs
We all know that Kamala Harris has an evolving set of beliefs since her coronation as the Democratโ€™s nominee last month. However, Axios has the details on just how much sheโ€™s changed.
โ€œNine areas in which she’s shifted views or her current position is unknown:

  1. Banning plastic straws for environmental concerns. (She’s no longer for it, as Axios reported Thursday.)
  2. A mandate for automakers to only make electric and hydrogen vehicles by 2035. (The Harris campaign won’t say whether she’s still for it.)
  3. Banning fracking because of concerns over global warming and potential water contamination. (No longer favors a ban.)
  4. A mandatory buyback program for assault weapons as part of her gun safety agenda. (She’s dropped this idea.)
  5. Decriminalizing crossing the border from a criminal offense to a civil one. (No longer supports.)
  6. Reparations for slavery, which many progressives argued for during the 2020 primary. (Position unclear.)
  7. Building a wall on the Southwest border, a defining Trump promise that many Democrats have fought. (Accepted it as part of the bipartisan border package that Republicans killed.)
  8. A federal jobs guarantee that was part of her Green New Deal proposal. (No longer for it.)
  9. Medicare for All, which Harris embraced in her first year as senator. (She’s backed off this.)โ€
Erick Erickson (9/6/2024)

I want to vote for a candidate for president who looks like me.

Sarcasm alert – tongue in cheek

I’m a low information voter who just wants to vote for a presidential candidate who looks like me. Unfortunately, none of the candidates are old, fat, bald, and ugly. Never mind, I won’t bother to vote.

Union Township welcomes new and growing businesses

Some of the below may be pending trustee approval:

  • Cranium Cookie scheduled their grand opening for October 1 at 11 AM inside the Eastgate Mall (near the food court). Cranium cookies are “brain food.”
  • A new development is approved for the area north of the Echelon apartments on Glen Este – Withamsville Road. Although not finalized, the new businesses appear to include The Works Pizza, Bad Tom Smith Brewing, By Golly’s Bar & Grill, and more. Well, I guess that is “the works.”
  • Starbucks is “brewing” plans to potentially raze the old Taco Bell “Tom Yum” on Ohio Pike near Bach Buxton. Their plans are under review.
  • New construction has begun at the site of the new Wyler Super Store location. They have “shifted into high gear” and are building a used car superstore.
  • Progress continues at the materials reclamation center off Winding Creek Boulevard, near the Township line. We hope that the construction activities will conclude this year.
  • Panda Express has razed the car wash next to the Union Township library and will build a new location there. It’s an “appetizing” venture. The overpass construction is delaying their start date. This project is beginning to look like a 2025 completion.
  • Mercy Health urgent care center is under construction in the Jungle Jim’s parking lot in front of LaRosa’s. They’ll soon be repairing “broken” bones, skin, and more. We are waiting for the tenant to complete interior buildout on this, and are waiting for an updated timeline.
  • Children’s Hospital is under construction in the Ivy Pointe area near TQL. Our concerns have been “healed.”
  • Wawa will be taking over the old Mt. Carmel Kroger location. Rah-rah to Wawa for taking over a shuttered business. Demolition has begun and construction is expected to be complete early next year.
  • Alfaa purchased and submitted plans to build on an empty lot on the corner of Aicholtz Road and Eastgate Blvd. I’m wondering if they sell alfalfa sprouts?
  • A small strip mall is coming to the corner of SR 32 and Mt. Carmel Tobasco Road on Yates Lane. I expect them to be rolling in dough soon. A zoning permit has been issued. No start date has been announced.
  • The old Valero on the corner of Ohio Pike and Bennett Road is under new ownership. They will be tearing down the old building and constructing a new convenience and wine store. The previous condition of the property was certainly something to whine about.
  • The Home2 Suites is expected to open very soon. They have made certain “accommodations” and residents can “sleep well” knowing that.
  • Honda East will be “shifting gears” to “rev up” sales by expanding their operations in Cherry Grove. They might “tire,” “brake,” and “shock” you, but they are “on a roll.” Wouldn’t it be nice if they offered free samples? Construction has been delayed while they finalize their plans.
  • TQL will be adding an additional 1,000 jobs at its sprawling UT campus. The new southern wing will look similar to their recently added northern wing. The project is “trucking” along. “Total Quality” will be a “Logistic” requirement.
  • Kroger has “crushing” plans to demolish Sears and build a new 123,722 square foot Kroger Marketplace store detached from the mall. The store will include a Starbucks, drive through pharmacy, expanded deli, expanded bakery, a Murray Cheese section, sushi, expanded adult beverage section, apparel, home goods, expanded grocery section, and a Kroger fuel center with 18 fuel pumps. The fuel will be on the recently shuttered Wendyโ€™s side of the parking lot. The northeast side of the store will have a parking area for on-line pickup. The current Kroger store on Eastgate Boulevard will likely close in coordination with opening the new Kroger Marketplace store. All plans are currently on hold pending litigation with the owner of the Eastgate Mall.
